Karen Hayslip, Chief Human Resources Officer

Karen Hayslip is a graduate of Baker College in Muskegon, MI and holds an Associate’s Degree in Business – Secretarial Program.  She is certified in Professional Human Resources (PHR®) through the Human Resources Certification Institute.

Her professional experience began with New Muskegon, the local economic development outreach program, which included at that time, Muskegon County Economic Development Commission, Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce and the Muskegon Area Tourism Bureau. When these entities merged to form the Muskegon Economic Growth Alliance, Karen became the Office Manager / Personnel & Administrative Coordinator.  In this role, she was responsible for administrative and organizational personnel matters, benefit management, organizational procedures, evaluation processes, and providing administrative support to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and other standing committees.

Karen’s most recent position was the Human Resources Specialist with the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District, where she managed the organization’s recruitment strategies, employment process, credential verifications, onboarding, compensation and benefits, FMLA, ADA, COBRA and ACA compliance and reporting.

Karen has had numerous professional, community and volunteer affiliations including SHRM, Michigan Negotiator’s Association, Institute for Healing Racism, Employer’s Association of West Michigan, United Way, Intercultural Leadership Academy and the Community Leadership Academy.

In her spare time, you will find Karen taking advantage of the many things Muskegon County has to offer including hiking the state parks, riding the bike trails, enjoying the beach, kayaking and fishing.   She enjoys attending local events, art fairs and festivals and appreciates live music of all kinds.  When not in Muskegon, she enjoys long weekends or a camping trip in northern Michigan and occasional travel.
